Sightseeing spots of Kesennuma Oshima & Iwaizaki | Kesennuma, Miyagi Japan

Miyagi Kesennuma Sightseeing Kesennuma Oshima & Iwaizaki

This is the scenery of Iwaizaki, which is known as a tourist attraction in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture Japan, and Oshima, which is the largest remote island in Tohoku.
Kesennuma Oshima is a remote island in the Sanriku Reconstruction National Park, and was previously only accessible by the Oshima Kisen ferry.
However, with the opening of the Kesennuma Oshima Bridge on April 7, 2020, it is possible to walk and drive.

Iwaizaki
This is a limestone cape located about 10km south of the center of Kesennuma City.
You can see how the tide blows out through the rocky crevice on a high wave day.
This area was also damaged by the tsunami of the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011.
However, it became known that there was a pine that remained in the shape of a dragon, and it was called “dragon pine” and became familiar as a lucky charm.

Tatsumaizaki
Tatsumaizaki is a scenic spot at the southernmost tip of Kesennuma Oshima.
From the parking lot to the Ryumaizaki Lighthouse, you can see the scenery of the rough sea rushing into the strange rocks from the promenade that lasts about 10 minutes.

Odanohama Beach
This is a beach where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and water quality, which is ranked second in Japan in the “100 selections of excellent beaches” selected by the Ministry of the Environment.
However, this also suffered damage such as land subsidence and sand outflow during the Great East Japan Earthquake.
After that, local residents and volunteers from all over the country desperately carried out cleaning activities and debris removal, and in 2012 it became the first beach in Miyagi Prefecture to open the sea after the earthquake.
Since it is a sandy beach with a semi-circular curve surrounded by islands, the water is shallow and the waves are calm, and the beauty of the water that shines in the emerald green creates a beautiful landscape like a tropical landscape.

Kameyama Observatory
Located on the Kitagawa River in Kesennuma Oshima, this mountain is 235 meters above sea level, and you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and fantastic sunrise unique to the Rias coast.
From the Kameyama parking lot, walk to the summit for about 12 minutes to reach the observatory.

Kukunari Beach
It is a sandy beach named Kukunari Beach because it makes a sound when you step on the sand.
It has been designated as a national natural monument, and if the sand becomes dirty, the sound will not be heard, so it is a sandy beach that is untouched by humans.

It may be closed due to coronavirus infectious disease and the restoration work after the Great East Japan Earthquake, so please check the websites of tourism associations etc. when you are sightseeing or traveling.
