Fireworks to commemorate victims of the East Japan typhoon and pray for recovery
This is a video of a fireworks display held in Marumori Town, Igu District, Miyagi Prefecture Japan on October 12, 2023, to commemorate the victims of the 2019 East Japan Typhoon and pray for recovery from the disaster.
Typhoon No. 19, which occurred off the coast east of the Mariana Islands on October 6, 2019, rapidly intensified as it passed through an area with higher-than-normal seawater temperatures.
Just 39 hours after the typhoon started, it developed into a powerful typhoon with a central pressure of 915 hPa.
The typhoon maintained its strength and made landfall in Shizuoka Prefecture on October 12th, causing severe damage across eastern Japan until it turned into an extratropical cyclone off the eastern coast of Sanriku at 12 noon on the 13th.
In Marumori Town, Miyagi Prefecture Japan, after rain began on the 11th due to the influence of the autumn rain front, it rained extremely heavily from the evening of the 12th to the early morning of the 13th, with a total rainfall of 427.0 mm.
The maximum water level of rivers was 23.44m, an increase of 8.56m since the start of the rain at the Abukuma River, and 7.11m, an increase of 6.74m since the start of the rain, at the Kijio River.
A total of 18 rivers in the prefecture-managed Uchikawa, Shinkawa, and Gofukuya rivers collapsed, causing serious flooding damage in the town.
The heavy rains also caused human casualties, with 10 people losing their precious lives and one person missing.
In addition, many homes were damaged due to flooding, and a total of 1,073 homes were damaged by flooding above and below the floors.
After that, the day when the town suffered severe damage from the East Japan Typhoon in 2019 was designated as “Marumori Town Requiem Day.”
In addition to a memorial service to express remembrance of the typhoon victims and pass on their memories to future generations, 2,600 fireworks were set off in the evening.
