Last Cherry Blossoms Blooming at Okawa River

It is a row of cherry blossom trees in Okawa, Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture Japan, which was decided to be cut down by raising the embankment due to tsunami countermeasures.
In the city of Kesennuma, where more than 1,000 people were Victim by the Great East Japan Earthquake tsunami that occurred on March 11, 2011, there was a row of beautiful cherry trees on the embankment of the Okawa River that flowing through the city.
This row of cherry trees also suffered damage from the tsunami, and about one-third of the 179 cherry trees were lost, and some cherry trees died due to fire and salt damage.
However, the spring, which was one month after the earthquake, and the cherry blossoms that survived the following year, bloomed beautifully.
At the same time, the group that preserves the rows of Osen cherry trees in Kesennuma revived the Okawa Sakura Festival in 2012.
However, it has been decided that this cherry tree will be cut down along with the restoration work after the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The cherry blossom festival held here will be in its final stage in the spring of 2013, but the seven surviving trees will be transplanted to a park near the place where there was once a row of cherry trees.
