In place of Sendai Airport, which was rendered unusable due to damage caused by the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, airports in neighboring prefectures played a major role as the gateway to the skies of Tohoku.
One of these was Yamagata Airport in Higashine City, Yamagata Prefecture, which was used as a relief base for police, fire departments, and the US military in place of the damaged Sendai Airport, and operated special flights to replace public transportation, including the Tohoku Shinkansen, which had been rendered inoperable.
All Nippon Airways operated a Boeing 737-800 with registration JA55AN, which had the logo “Let’s work hard, united Japan” on the top of the fuselage, and operated with a message of hope for the recovery of the disaster-stricken areas.
I feel humbled by those who are supporting the recovery of the Pacific side of Tohoku, such as Miyagi Prefecture, but I also feel that we should not forget the presence of airport staff and airlines on the Sea of Japan side who supported their activities, and this expedition to Yamagata Airport made me feel that we should not forget.
