Sendai Airport, which was damaged by the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, was restored in just one month on April 13, 2011.
It served as the base for the U.S. military’s Operation Tomodachi, which worked hard to restore the disaster-stricken areas and provide relief to those affected. Due to the damage caused to the Sendai Airport passenger terminal, it was predicted that it would be unusable for several years. However, thanks to tireless restoration efforts, the airport has been restored to the point where civilian passenger planes can land, and special flights to Tokyo International Airport, which normally have no scheduled flights, have begun operating.
On the first day of recovery, a Boeing 737-800 aircraft with registration JA302J, operated by JAL Express, a consolidated subsidiary of Japan Airlines, operated as a special flight with the “Let’s Go Japan” logo.
