In the Gamo area of Miyagino Ward, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, there is a cherry tree that blooms beautiful flowers in the spring, and it was loved by locals as a sign of spring.
However, the flowers were damaged by the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011, and although I thought they would never bloom again, they remained untouched and beautiful despite being buried under rubble. It made the flowers bloom.
In various places along the coast of the Tohoku region, homes and precious lives were taken by the tsunami, but by mustering its last strength to bloom, it may have given people courage and hope.
In 2012, this cherry tree never bloomed and all the trees were necrotic, ending its life. The area is now a no-habitation zone, and it is being cut down to redevelop the land.
